CHRISTMAS CONCERT: The Annual Christmas Concert by Candlelight is on Saturday December 8 at 7.30pm. The Fletching Singers will present their annual Christmas Concert in the beautiful surroundings of the candlelit Fletching Church, the first with their new director, Michael Fields. As well as a selection of favourite carols, the programme will feature some beautiful extended works celebrating the season: Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols, Finzi’s In Terra Pax and O Magnum Mysterium, an enchanting and popular work by American composer Morten Lauridsen. The choir will be joined by soloists Sîan Sulke, soprano (award-winning student at Eastbourne College) and baritone, Sebastian Charlesworth. Mince pies and mulled wine will round off the evening. CHRISTMAS SING ALONG: The Chromatics Community Choir invite you for a Christmas Sing Along in Fletching Village Hall on Saturday December 22 at 3.30pm. £5 on the door, tea and festive cakes included. Raising funds for Dementia UK.

100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 22 November 1918. Interesting Wedding at Flething. For upwards of 400 years the family of Kenward have resided at Fletching, and yesterday (Thursday) one of its members was united to a son off a very old Wiltshire family. The bride was Miss Harriet Mary Kenward, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Kenward, of Barkham, Fletching, and the bridegroom was Mr Henry Francis Howell, son of the late Mr H Howell. of Whyr, Winterbourne, Wilts. The best girl was Miss Mabel Kenward, sister of the bride, Major E Hatfield. DSO was best man, and Mr Kenward gave his daughter away. The bride was attired in a dress of white silk and Maltese lace over georgette, with georgette sleeves and loose panel back and front, beautifully embroidered with small pearls and silver thread. Her veil of Swiss bridal net and wreath of orange blossom and myrtle leaves were loaned by her cousin. She carried a bouquet of white carnations and heather. Her attendant’s dress was of saxe blue crepe de chine with black silk, and velvet hat trimmed with blue silk flowers, her bouquet being of bronze chrysanthemums. The going-away dress of the bride was a costume of dark green gabardine with skunk collar, the velour hat being in harmony with the colour of the costume. The service, which conducted by the Vicar, the Rev E Roberts, was choral. Miss H Attenborough presiding at the organ. Palms, ferns, and flowers adorned either side of the chancel steps, and the congregation was a numerous one. There was no reception, only the nearest relatives being invited to Barkham. Mr and Mrs Howell, who received very many gifts and expressions of goodwill, are spending the honeymoon at Bath and Torquay, and on its completion will take up their new home at Kingston, Lewes.
