CHROMATICS CHOIR: The choir meets on Monday at 7.45pm.

FLETCHING SINGERS: This group meet on Tuesday at 7.45pm.

PAINTER’S CLUB: Is on Wednesday at 1pm.

MARTIAL ARTS: Kobudo Martial Arts meet on Thursday at 5pm.

BONFIRE SOCIETY: As most of you aware we had a scaled down celebrations this year with just a small procession, a bonfire and firework display. I would like to say thank you to those people and families who joined the procession. Last year we only had eight core members who did all the fund raising, organised, planned and ran the night and cleared up afterwards. We cannot manage this again this year so unless we get more villagers and people involved, either with fund raising, coming on the committee and helping us on the night before, the day and the day after. There are lots of ways people can help. Because of this we have brought our annual general meeting forward and following it with a general meeting so that people can find out what is involved and what they could do. This meeting is on Sunday at 6pm in the village hall. If we don’t get any support and help then the society will fold and there will be no more celebrations. If you do not want this to happen then please come along to this meeting. If you are interested and cannot make this meeting then please email me your details and what you are willing to do to [email protected]. My family have been involved in Fletching Bonfire Society with members of our family holding various posts over the last 70 years. It certainly would be sad to see this great tradition end. 100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 21 January 1916. Fletching Volunteers at Uckfield. On Saturday afternoon the men of the Uckfield Company of the VTC, who form the local Platoon and the Fletching Platoon had a most enjoyable shooting match, which was followed by a capital tea. The shooting was done on the new range, and the conditions were two rounds deliberate and 10 rapid in 100 seconds, at 25 yards range, only twelve competitors to count. Fletching did not do very well at rapid firing, and some of their team were disqualified for not getting off their shots within the required time, but in the ‘deliberate’ contest they gave the Uckfield men a good race for top place and only lost by a very narrow margin, Mr G E Hart was the referee. He was very pleased to know that two possibles had been made and they were both by Fletching men, Corporal Ralph and Mr S Ridley. He hoped that in the future there would be many friendly contests between the two Platoons, and he thought that when they met on Piltdown Common the Uckfield Platoon would be at a great disadvantage, as the Fletching men knowing the ground so well, would be able to dig themselves in before Uckfield had a chance of discovering them.
