FLOOD DEFENCE WORK TO START SOON

THE Environment Agency was this week investigating the exact cause of the Morris Road, Lewes, flooding on March 30.

Andrew Gilham, flood risk manager, said a flood watch warning was sent to participating local residents because of the high spring tide that was due on Thursday last week.

The river did not overflow its banks, he added, and the Agency was not told of the Morris Road incident.

But, judging by the description of the flooding, it would seem that a faulty culvert flap was to blame and the Agency would be dealing with it.

On a happier note, he added, work would soon be starting on the Cliffe flood defence work which would include improving all the culvert flaps in the area.

The first phase of the 2 million project would be to put defences up between the Phoenix Causeway and Harveys Brewery.
