Florence celebrates 100th birthday

"AMAZING" Florence Vaughan has celebrated her 100th birthday at Camelot Nursing Home, Worthing, where she has lived for the past four years.

Flo was born in Canterbury, Kent, and went to live at Wenceling Cottages, Lancing, in 1935.

This was following her husband being made redundant from Ashford Railway Works during the 1930s recession and going to work at the new Lancing Railway Carriage Works.

Her husband died in 1968.

Flo lived at Wenceling Cottages for 50 years, until she was moved to Aston House, Shoreham, Wenceling Cottages having been demolished.

Despite being registered blind, Flo continued to live alone until the age of 95.

She was joined by her two daughters, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren for her birthday celebrations, which ended with a visit from the Rev Gail Souppouris and Jonathan Marshall, representing the Church of the Good Shepherd, Shoreham Beach, which Flo has attended for 74 years.

One of her daughters said it had been an "amazing day for an amazing lady".
