Flying the flag for a clean coastline

SEASIDE visitors to Littlehampton this summer will once again be bathing in Blue Flag waters.

For a fourth consecutive year the stretch of beach at the coastguard tower has retained its Blue Flag status, awarded by Encams, the environmental charity that runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

The beach is one of only three in West Sussex to hold the flag, the other two are Bognor and West Witterings.

The Blue Flag award recognises clean, well-managed beaches which have to pass strict criteria such as first-aid provision, clean toilets, no dog fouling and access and facilities for disabled visitors.

Water quality is sampled regularly throughout the summer season and Blue Flag winners must also show commitment to environmental management and the provision of information.

Arun District Council chairman Stephen Haymes, said: "It's fantastic news and a great boost for tourism in Arun that Littlehampton has been awarded the Blue Flag status yet again.

"Many people from a range of organisations work very hard throughout the year to keep our beaches and bathing water in such good condition.

"It's thanks to them that we can celebrate this achievement."

An official flag raising ceremony will be held outside the Littlehampton Foreshore Station at noon on June 1.

The public are welcome to attend.
