Ronnie said: “15 years ago I lost my mum to cancer and worked tirelessly to raise essential income for Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan were beyond excellent, caring for and treating my mum right up to the bitter end. I was fitter and younger then and threw myself and wife into organising ceilidhs and marathons. In my little way I was doing something to right a terrible wrong.

“Little did I realise cancer does not make deals! It’s there all the time and no one is immune. In 2009 my lovely wife (herself a nurse) was diagnosed with cancer. By June 2010, despite the chemo and caring, despite Macmillan support in so many ways, she succumbed. Mary died on the night of our 28th wedding anniversary, in the Oncology ward – none of the anniversary balloons tied to the bed frame worked their magic, she slipped away.

“Many dark times followed for myself and sons, but six years on and I am blessed with good health and great support. I now have a new partner Sally, who lost a younger brother to cancer at only 56. We both understand loss and trauma but have a driving desire to help.

“Our approach is not to rattle cans but organise a Macmillan Charity Concert once each year. All our wonderful friends in the music and entertainment world help us to put on a concert at a very affordable ticket price with the best evenings entertainment and professional artists – all doing their bit for Macmillan Cancer Support.
