Known for singing with The Risen Road, Laura and her partner, Adam have formed Hickory Signals to play ‘raw’ folk music.

Taking inspiration from the folk music of England, Ireland, Scotland and America, the duo perform original music as well as interpretations of traditional tunes with pared-down instrumentation.

Strong vocal melodies are accompanied with acoustic guitar, flute, glockenspiel and a variety of percussion, building songs carefully and minimally to atmospheric effect.

After Hickory Signals played at The Brunswick in Hove in October, independent music label Overhead Wires voted the duo ‘performing star of the month’.

Rich Ward from Overhead Wires Promotions said: “Harnessing inspirations and canvassing their own interpretations of traditional Irish folk music was the shining dagger that opened an entire room of hearts.

“Laura’s vocals and Adam’s finger picking are a joy to become absorbed in.”

The Hickory Signals EP launch will be at West Street Loft on Friday, March 21, at 7.30pm.

There will also be the chance to see paintings by Adam Ronchetti.

Laura said: “We will be joined by various friends and their instruments for an evening of folk music.

“There will be the likes of Max Sweatman on hurdy gurdy and Tom Pryor on fiddle. Best of all, entry is completely free.”

As well as doing vocals, Laura plays flute and guitar, while Adam plays guitar, percussion and glockenspiel.

Their first demo, recorded live in bathrooms, conservatories and vans, was released at the end of July last year. It is available via www.hickorysignals.bandcamp.com or visit www.facebook.com/HickorySignals for more information.
