Following the herring to Battle

BATTLE Knit and Knatter Group is having a special meeting on Sunday (May 11) at the Almonry, in Battle High Street.

The group has invited Janey Moffatt to tell members about the ‘Follow the Herring’ exhibition and its centrepiece - a boat with a knitted coat, accompanied by knitted herrings, known as the ‘silver darlings’.

The exhibition is visiting 12 venues as it travels down the east coast, starting in Musselburgh and finishing in Hastings at the end of July 2014.

The display explores the fishing industry and the lives of the ‘herring lassies’ who followed the fishing fleets as they chased the herring shoals down the coast. There will be live theatre and a knitted fish and chip stall amongst a display of knitted objects made by local people.

To mark the occasion, the Battle Knit and Knatter Group is planning to decorate the Stade with knitted sea creatures and many other knitted decorations.

The group is appealing for knitters of all standards and none to join them in the project.

Members will be happy to teach you to knit, to lend you patterns, and share their stash of recycled yarn.
