Food 4 Thought at Bexhill High

Food for a healthy future is the aim behind the British Heart Foundation campaign launched this week at Bexhill High School.

Food 4 Thought is aimed at Year 7/8 pupils, aged between 11/13, in the hope of encouraging them to make healthy food choices and boost their chances of remaining healthy as they grow older.

A study by the heart charity discovered that 82 percent of children in the South East do not consider crisps are a treat, and more than half of them don't think sweets are either.

BHF representative Maria Sullivan said: "This is about helping them make healthier food choices. We are not trying to tell them what to eat, but instead we are trying to tell them that by having a high fat high salt diet, they are making problems for their heart later in life.

"Part of this particular campaign is focusing on how manufacturers use market tricks to get this age-group to buy their products - like free gifts, or celebrity endorsement."

Assistant Principal Jeanette Pollitt felt that the healthy eating message was getting through to Bexhill High pupils.

She said: "I do think they are more aware.

"I am very pleased with the choices they make - they do choose to eat good healthy food in their lunch hour.

"If I think back to what children used to eat even five years ago, it was very much about burgers and chips. But I think with all this, and the five-a-day, the message is getting through."
