Figures from a nationwide survey revealed a huge 43 per cent of people in the south east find that the round, smooth, chocolaty treat helps them reminisce of their lunchbox days.

Pink wafers come in a close second with iced gems in third, both showing more popularity among female voters with Battenburg cake coming in fourth, the more popular vote amongst male voters.

The survey comes as a way to kick off the new Dream Tea campaign from the charity Dreams Come True, which aim to make the dreams of seriously and terminally ill children across the country a reality.

Peter Newman, chief executive of Dreams Come True, said: “We thought an interesting and fun insight into the nation’s childhood memories of tea-time treats would be a fantastic way launch the 2015 Dream Tea Campaign.

“Every single person who organises or takes part in Dream Tea will be helping to put a great big smile on the faces of some very special children. So let’s crack open the Wagon Wheels, Jammy Dodgers and Battenburg and get those kettles singing!”

Charity fundraising packs are available from www.dreamscometrue.uk.com and provide a range of fun ideas on how to raise money, such as guessing the weight of a cupcake to what teatime treat your friends could most be associated.

They also want to know what teatime treat you are. Are you more of a creamy and chocolaty Wagon Wheel, feisty Jammy Dodger, girly Pink Wafer Biscuit or an intellectual slice of Battenburg Cake?
