Footballer given surgery after alleged attack during match

A FOOTBALLER had to undergo facial surgery after an alleged assault during a football match in Southbourne.

The 29-year-old man from Havant was playing at Bourne Community College on Sunday, January 15, when he was allegedly assaulted by an opposing player, a 21-year-old Bognor Regis.

The victim was taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth where he remains for treatment.

A police spokesperson said: “This was a very nasty attack which happened in broad daylight and was witnessed by other footballers and spectators.

“We would like to hear from anyone who has information that could help police with their inquiries. Please call 101 quoting 694 of 15/01 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

No arrests have yet been made.
