Footpath vandals spark crackdown

A spate of trespass and criminal damage on a public right of way around Slindon has led to a police crackdown on the illegal use of footpaths.

Complaints have been received by councillors from residents and other legitimate users about horse riders using the paths in the Slindon and Aldingbourne area.

The surface of footpath 376 which runs between Slindon Bottom Road and Britten's Lane has become impassable, especially in wet winter months.

Rangers from the footpaths' managers at the South Downs joint committee put up signs telling riders they should not be using the paths '“ only for the notices to be torn down.

A fence with pedestrian access across the path, installed for the next stage of the campaign, has also been badly damaged by someone wth a saw. This caused 500 of damages.

These acts of criminal damage are being investigated by Sussex Police.

PC Peter Child said: "We are taking this seriously. Pedestrians on footpaths do not expect to encounter horses in the same way as equestrians on bridleways do not expect to encounter motor vehicles.

"Each type of access route is restricted to a type of user for a reason. Destroying the fence and posts is totally unacceptable and we will seek to prosecute offenders."

Angela Shepherd, one of the rangers, said repairing the damaged fence would cost at least another 100.

"It is unfortunate that a few horse riders could give the majority who are responsible a bad name, especially as we are lucky to have an abundance of well-signposted bridleways in this area," she stated.

"Anyone who would like to discuss the issue can call the joint committee on 01243 811533."
