Former carer in 10k run

A FORMER teacher will run the Bognor Prom 10k this month to raise money for mental health charity Mind.

Fred Shaw, of St Thomas’s Road, Worthing, has been training hard for the event, which he will run with his daughter.

The 63-year-old has first-hand knowledge of mental health issues as he has spent many years as a carer.

He said: “I think it is important to raise the profile of this charity and of mental health issues in general.

“There are lots of young people in this country who are suffering from internal stresses, anxiety and insecurities.

“It is very common and can come on as a result of a number of factors.

“Unfortunately, there is an ignorance and a lack of understanding because it is the unknown.

“The Paralympics has given us lots of wonderful role models but there is no equivalent for people that suffer from intrinsic problems.

“It affects one in three people at different times of their lives and in various ways. We all have a limit before we break down.”

Mr Shaw has been training for the event, which takes place on Sunday, at 10.30am.

“I have always ran and have completed a couple of marathons in the past as well as fun runs with Goring Road Runners. Organisations like Mind are working to improve all aspects of support for people suffering from this health issue and they need your support, too.

“I want to raise as much money as I possibly can.”
