The Denton Community Challenge will feature a range of sporting activities for young people.

Former England and Sussex cricket player Jim Parks will open the Howzat! Denton Community Challenge Cricket this year on Saturday June 6.

Cricket will be the theme for the fun sports themed event taking place on the Avis Way Recreation Ground.

Organisers are planning a whole range of sporting activities for the hundreds of people who will turn up.

John Fitzgerald from the challenge said: “This year promises to be even bigger and better than ever.

“The theme this year is cricket and the title is Howzat! So that we can all celebrate 150 years of County Cricket and the Sussex County Cricket Club has kindly donated a special raffle prize.”

It will be held from 1pm to 5pm and feature an indoor craft fair at Denton Social Centre next to the field.

There will be a cake competition and entrants can bring homemade cakes to the social centre no later than 12 noon on the day in time for judging.

On the field there will be stalls, a full programme of arena events and a series of sporting challenges where children can win rosettes.

The MC for the day will be popular local DJ and karaoke king Keith Johnson.

And there will be a big raffle with great prizes and separate draws for a pair of return Virgin Atlantic air tickets to New York and a signed cricket bat from Sussex CCC. Last year hundreds of people attended.

The opening ceremony will be at 1pm and will be performed by Jim Parks and Norman Baker, the recently retired MP for Lewes and Newhaven.

Proceeds will be divided between the James Daniel Memorial Fund, the Friends and Associates of Denton School and St Leonard’s Church in Denton.

The James Daniel Memorial Fund was set up after 19 year-old James’ tragic death in 2005. It raises money through various events.

Local schools and sports clubs can apply for funds to help buy equipment and coaching aids to encourage sports for children and youth in the local area.
