Former hotel bar manager sentenced for £9k theft

A FORMER member of staff at a top hotel has narrowly avoided jail after admitting stealing thousands of pounds from his employer.

Edward Backhouse, 35, pleaded guilty to stealing £8,900 from the PowderMills Hotel, in Powdermill Lane, Battle, whilst working as a bar manager at the venue.

Backhouse, from Towerscroft Avenue, St Leonards-on-Sea, stole the money between June 19 and September 19 last year.

He was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on July 28.

The judge handed Backhouse a nine month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work and must pay £500 court costs.

Backhouse will return to court on September 5 for a proceeds of crime hearing.
