“It has been an honour and privilege to serve the people of Hastings and St Leonards,” she said.

“I will miss all of my fellow Conservative councillors but will continue to work with and represent the many charities I support.”

Maureen and her family moved to St Leonards in 1959, where she quickly became a stalwart of the Young Conservatives.

After working in branches of Lloyds Bank for many years, Maureen and her late husband Terry became hoteliers of the Yelton and Mayfair hotels for nine and 18 years respectively.

Cllr Charlesworth first enjoyed electoral success in 1989 by being elected to St Helens Ward in a hotly fought by-election.

She also represented Central St Leonards for four years from 1993 to 1997.

Fellow Tory councillor for Maze Hill Rob Lee said she has been a hard-working champion for many charities and associations including Emmanus, SAFE, The Royal British Legion, SSAFA, the Hoteliers Association and is currently president of Hastings Week.
