Former POW and ‘Long March’ survivor talks at Old Heathfield

Friends of All Saints’ Church, Old Heathfield (FASCOH) welcome Air Commodore Charles Clarke OBE to the next Thursday Topics session at The Space on June 5.

Charles Clarke is President of Royal Air Forces Ex-Prisoner of War Association, Chairman of Bomber Command Association and now, aged 90, is a born survivor. As a member of 619 Squadron Bomber Command, he flew 18 operations including raids on Berlin, Stuttgart, and Leipzig. He was just 17 when his Lancaster bomber was shot down over Bavaria. As a POW in Stalag Luft 3 he experienced the retribution following the Great Escape when 50-recaptured escapees were shot – murdered under orders from Berlin. In the coldest winter in living memory (-30C,) he was one of more than 80,000 POWs who force-marched west across Poland, Czechoslovakia and Germany. Charles survived the three month ordeal, fighting frostbite, dysentery, typhoid and even the Allied bombing. Tickets are £5 and the talk begins at 7.30pm. For information ring 01435 862695 or email
