Year 4 students at Arunside School, in Blackbridge Lane, gave a warm reception to former pupil Craig Goldsmith as he returned to the school to teach the children a few tips about cooking as well as what meals they can create to stay healthy.

Craig, who works as the head chef for The Chequers Inn, in Rowhook, agreed to come and make some mouth-watering meals with the children as part of the school’s focus on healthy eating and the New Primary Curriculum’s emphasis on learning a wider range of life skills.

He showed off some of his ‘chef skills’ and got the children involved in preparing the ingredients as they created a delicious dish of couscous and chicken for the whole class to enjoy.

Drew, an eight-year-old pupil at the school, said: “You should be in the Masterchef final!”

It was Craig’s first trip back to his old primary school since he left in 2001 and the building has gone through some dramatic changes in that time.

The capacity of the school has doubled from 210 students to 420 and a whole host of new classrooms have been added including a new food technology room which Craig was very excited to visit.

The chef has worked at The Chequers Inn for eight years and with support from his mentor, Tim Neal, he worked his way up from washing-up boy to become head chef at the popular eating place.
