Last week’s Ofsted report, which confirmed the school had been placed in special measures, was critical of the former advisory body.

Of the latter, it said ‘the academy council does not provide enough challenge for the principal and staff’ and needed to ‘understand how to discharge their responsibilities for holding the principal and other key staff to account for the academy’s performance’.

Roger Purdom, former vice-chair of the school’s advisory body, said: “There was no need to ‘stand down’ the academy council, nor for the principal to be removed.

“What the Woodard Academies Trust (WAT) should have done was wait for the report to come out, then set up a meeting with the principal and his senior leadership team and representatives of the academy council. We could all have sat down together and worked out a strategy for the next phase of TLA.”
