The founder of the Macmillan Coffee Morning is hosting an event in Ringmer to mark 25 years of the annual charity fundraiser.

Joan Evett was working for Cancer Relief when she conjured up the idea of the coffee morning, which has turned into one of the most popular and successful events in aid of charity.

She said: “I organised fundraising events as part of my work but the simplest ones were always the best.

“I thought of the idea for a coffee morning while in the bath actually, and it’s just continued to grow ever since. It’s amazing to see how big the event is now and how much money it has raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

This year, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning takes place on Friday, September 25. Joan is hosting a special event to celebrate 25 years since the first coffee morning at St Mary’s Church, in Ringmer, at 10am.

She added: “There will be lots of cake, including my specialism, the chocolate cake. I’ve lived in Ringmer for 18 years, so it made sense to have the event here.

“This is turning into a wonderful year for me - not only is it the event’s 25th anniversary but my granddaughter, Kim, married Andy Murray in April and is set to bring a beautiful baby into the world too.”
