Four-figure sum raised at Climping charity event

A £100 gift from a female wellwisher helped to make a charity event in Climping a four-figure success.

The generous donation ensured the event held by Middleton couple Clive and Ann Millett benefited LIFE Community Services by 1,000.

The organisation is a Christian charity working in the town of George in the Cape Province of South Africa with some 2,000 abused and neglected township children who include victims of AIDS. The charity runs care centres, a back-to-school programme and education programmes.

Mr and Mrs Millett volunteered to hold the fundraising event after several visits to George when they found out LIFE's director, Sally Versfeld, was going to be in the UK.

Mrs Millett gathered 70 prizes from local firms to be raffled after a presentation by Ms Versfeld about the work of LIFE. This touched the hearts of the 80 or so people present, who bought raffle tickets and bid for items at an auction to take the total raised to 1,000.

Mrs Millett said: "People came up to Clive and myself afterwards to say what a wonderful morning it had been and the talk that was given had opened their eyes to just how bad things are in George."
