Free assessment rides for motorcyclists

SPRING will soon be in the air and motorcyclists will be keen to dust off their machines and get out on the roads again.

But before leaping on their bikes, Chairman of the East Sussex Advanced Motorcyclists (ESAM), Andy Martin said they are encouraging motorcyclists, of every persuasion, to pose themselves a couple of questions.

Andy said: "They should be asking themselves if their bike is fully road worthy - both legal and mechanically sound - and how good their riding skills are."

He added: "It's vitally important that motorcyclists return to the road fully confident, and that both they and their machines are in prime condition ready to meet the challenges they will encounter on today's roads."

"Bikers are an extremely vulnerable group of road users. In the event of an accident, the risk of death or injury to a motorcyclist is thirty five times greater than that to a car driver, there is no protection offered to them by their mode of transport. All that stands between the biker and the road surface is their protective clothing and their riding skills."

For bikers who are wanting to hone their riding skills, the ESAM (who are affiliated with the Institute of Advanced Motorists) is offering a free, no obligation assessment ride with a qualified Observer.

Andy said: "The assessment rides are not about criticising riding skills they offer an opportunity to gain an appreciation of how improving motorcycling skills can make riding safer and more pleasurable."

"Advanced motoring is not about slowing down, it's about sharpening awareness, predicting hazards well in advance, making motorcyclists more adept at observing other road users and road signs and producing smoother, more controlled and ultimately safer riders."

The offer is open to motorcyclists who live in or near East Sussex and anyone who is interested is invited to go along to an ESAM Open Day, which are held on the second Sunday of every month at Reid Hall, Boreham Street, near Herstmonceux between 9am and 1pm.
