Residents are invited to Boots the Chemist, in North Street, on Saturday, April 30. Testing will be available from 11am to 3pm and no appointment is necessary.

Tim Reedman, club president, said: “Rotary’s long-term support for the Know Your Blood Pressure campaign has reached hundreds of thousands of people in the last decade, potentially saving many lives.

“The ideal blood pressure is 120/80 but we know many people have a reading above that and a quarter have dangerously high blood pressure.

“Our club is pleased to have the opportunity to offer these free tests in a relaxed and friendly environment – there are no white coats – and we look forward to seeing you.”

High blood pressure remains the single biggest risk factor for stroke, contributing to 54 per cent of strokes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and young people can be affected, as well as older people.

Over the past three years, Chichester Rotary Club, in association with The Stroke Association, has organised blood pressure testing for more than 400 people. Of these, a quarter were advised to seek medical advice within one month and 24 people with very high blood pressure were advised to go to their doctors within one week.

There are 152,000 strokes in the UK each year.
