Free fire safety check-up in Littlehampton could save your life...

AS WINTER’S chill looms ever closer, firefighters in Littlehampton are urging residents to have their electric blankets tested, in preparation for the expected cold weather.

Next month will see officers from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service hosting a free safety check-up for all those in Littlehampton, at the Tamarisk Centre, in Beach Road.

Fire crews will also be providing advice on how to stay warm during the chillier periods of the year.

Jackie Boyle, community fire safety officer for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, said: “Last year, 184 of the blankets we tested had a fault or were more than 10 years old.

“Such a high number really highlights the value of getting them checked regularly. Every year, nationally, there are around 1,000 fires caused by unsafe blankets and, sadly, many people are injured and some even killed.

“The elderly can be especially vulnerable so before the cold weather sets in we are urging people to take up a free test and give themselves and their families the peace of mind of knowing their blanket is safe and that they will be sleeping more safely at night.”

The session in Littlehampton will be on Monday, October 22, from 9.30am-1pm and 1.30-4.30pm. Those wishing to take part must book in advance by calling 01243 642124.
