The Council has agreed to take up any funding shortfall from the Government scheme, which will be reviewed in 2011.

A photographic ID in the form of driving licence or passport proving age is required at every visit. In addition, Freedom Leisure is offering a two-year '60+ Swim Pass' for 2. This will mean quicker access to the pools at busy times as the photo ID will only be needed when purchasing the card.

Rother District Council cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure Cllr Deirdre Williams said: "This scheme offers people the chance to stay fit and healthy at no cost '“ something which is becoming increasingly important in the current economic climate.

"Swimming is a low impact sport with proven health benefits. The Council is delighted to be able to give this opportunity to its residents aged 60 and over."
