'Frenzied attack on brother' - sentence reduced

A MAN who stabbed his elder brother in a "savage and frenzied" attack leaving him with permanent injuries, has won a reduction in his jail term in London's Court of Appeal on November 18.

Roland Crittenden, 33, of Norfolk Close, Sidley was jailed for eight years on November 22 last year after pleading guilty at Lewes Crown Court to wounding with intent.

Crittenden and his brother, Gary, were living with their parents in Hastings at the time of the attack in October, 2000, judges were told.

It happened after he returned from the pub and was told off by his brother for breaking a kettle, the court heard.

Crittenden grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed his brother several times. His terrified victim managed to escape and call the police on his mobile phone.

During the call, emergency staff on the other end of the line heard Crittenden saying: "are you still there? Ain't you dead yet?".

Lord Justice Mance, sitting with Mr Justice Sachs and Mr Justice Mitchell, slashed Crittenden's jail term to five years.

But the court also imposed a three-year "extended licence period", meaning that, for the three years after his release Crittenden can be recalled to prison if he puts a foot wrong.
