Fresh water pearls come alive for WI

Joan Wells, Rose Green WI president, hosted the first meeting of 2009 and wished all members a happy new year. Jerusalem was sung and birthday gifts presented.

Mrs Wells thanked Ann Hannington for the president's flowers and tea ladies were chosen. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved and matters arising were dealt with.

Rose Green WI had raised funds with two recent table top cake sales, one in the village and the other at the Regis Centre. After the talk on mercy ships at the November meeting, a plea was made for various items which were wanted to help patients on the mercy ships. Mrs Shirley Diaper was asked to oversee the collection.

So far one sewing machine, two pairs of sunglasses, 17 packs of pencils, ten notebooks and 199 pairs of knickers had been donated.

The January evening talk was given by Barbara Bartlett and entitled 'Chinese freshwater pearls'. Mrs Bartlett had become interested in pearls when visiting Hong Kong with her husband.

Members learnt how pearls are seeded and harvested and also handled, lengths of varying shapes, colours and sizes. It was an interesting and informative talk made more so by the enthusiasm of the speaker.

Mrs Bartlett makes many items of jewellery from real pearls and brought a good selection to display.
