FRIDAY KNIGHTS - John de Pecham (d. 1293)

Battle of Lewes.
Battle of Lewes.

Keen local historian Jon Gunson has compiled this series entitled Friday Knight - knights who fought at the Battle of Lewes - giving each a brief biography.

History has not been kind to Sir John.

He may have fought valiantly at the Siege of Rochester and the Battle of Lewes (he was present at both, with the Baronial forces), but we have no documentary record of this.

However he turns up in Henry III’s Fine Rolls because on the way home from the Battle to his home in East Peckham (Kent), he stopped off in Maresfield, raided the manor of the royalist knight Nicholas de Yattendon, and carried away goods to the value of £10.

A salutary reminder that not everyone who fought in the Baron’s War was motivated entirely by idealism.
