The pair, from Icklesham, decided to take action after being moved by the plight of the hospice, which was badly damaged in the recent devastating fire.

Susie explained: “My best friend Lisa Beattie sadly lost her mum three years ago after being an in-patient at the hospice.

“The care given to her mum was second to none. The kindness and compassion given by the hospice team to the family too was overwhelming and made her passing a more bearable. There had also been support for Lisa from the hospice in the following months after her losing her mum.

“This amongst other reasons makes the hospice dear to our hearts.

Upon hearing of the fire I got together with Lisa and we started the St Michael’s Fire Fund.

“Within a matter of hours something which had started as a small auction of donations amongst friends had spiralled across the Hastings and St Leonards area, with many major local companies donating their services for us to auction.

“The way the town has come together over this tragedy has left us in total awe of the people of Hastings and surrounding areas and their generosity towards the fund and auction.

“To ensure this auction is a dynamic success, we would ask the public to continue with their amazing support and community spirit by bidding in the online auction which runs from 10am on Saturday August 1 to 8pm on Sunday August 2. All proceeds will be going to the hospice.”

The hospice issued a statement to say: “Thank you so to everyone who has donated or supported this wonderful auction set up by a group of local supporters. Please do visit our official page www.facebook.com/stmichaelshospice for all updates and news as well as ways you can support us at this difficult time.”
