Full house for floral art show

Arranging flowers enabled a Middleton florist to raise about £8 a minute for seriously ill children.

Katie Kearns delighted a sell-out audience with her artistic talents in aid of the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

Tickets for her two-hour demonstration, added to the sale of raffle tickets, is likely to have brought in almost 1,000 for the hospice.

Katie's mum, Teresa Kearns, who helped at the event, said: "The people at the hospice said that they had never had such a success. They thought the amount that was raised was amazing."

The show at St Mary's Church Hall in Felpham was watched by more than 100 spectators.

Katie, who runs Daisy's Flower Shop, showed them how to use tulips, freesias, lillies and amaryllis to stunning effect. She created table arrangements, hand-tied bouquets, vase arrangements, displays for commercial premises and plenty of pink-themed arrangements for Mother's Day.

Katie has worked in floristry for five years. She hopes to hold more charity shows on her shop premises.

"I am proving that small businesses can succeed in hard times. It is all about quality," she said.
