Fun in the sun at May Day revels

BARRACK Hall Park was buzzing with activity on Bank Holiday Monday as Bexhill Old Town Preservation Society staged its annual spring treat for residents.

Traditional dancing round the maypole proved as popular as ever, with a beginners’ troupe from King Offa primary school among the children taking part and providing delightful evidence that this custom seems set fair to continue for many years to come.

Pauline Bullock, for the Old Town Preservation Society, said: “The dancing was part of a very popular and enjoyable day, which after a chilly start turned out bright and sunny so that many people came along with picnics.

“The local sea cadets did a steady trade in hot dogs and the like, and Chantry School parents and teachers also sold snacks. Bexhill Lions Club organised games and Rother Children’s Centres also had plenty for youngsters to enjoy, such as face-painting and art.”

Judging for a May Queen saw Georgina Morris crowned in the role, with Zarah Ambrose and Lemia Ben-Caid as princesses. All three enjoyed a tour round Bexhill in a horse-drawn carriage. Lucky chimney sweep for the day was Hector Evett, from Chantry Primary School.

Steve Nutter’s carousels featured Victorian-style fun-fair rides for children, while for the older ones there was a gravity-defying “gyroscope” experience on offer. Richard Brown, from Polegate, and friends set up a miniature steam railway for crowds to enjoy.

Master of ceremonies was Bosco the Clown, alias Andy Dinsdale, and Bexhill’s Furry Friends highlighted the work done by volunteers in visiting hospitals and care homes with their pets to help lift the spirits of patients who enjoy the companionship tame animals can provide.

“It was lovely to see so many people in the park, getting involved and generally having a great time,” said Pauline, who added that the event is funded by the Old Town Preservation Society for the benefit of the community.

Pauline said that the Society hopes to enter a decorated float in this year’s Bexhill Carnival procession on Saturday, July 30 and would like to hear from anyone able to supply and drive a suitable flat-bed vehicle. She can be contacted on 01424 211711.
