Fun lessons with a range of creatures

The pupils in Years 3 and 4 at Castlewood School in Southwater were given a real treat recently when Joe from Zoolab visited them with a selection of creatures including a tarantula and a leopard gecko that would usually inhabit the Rainforest.

If they wished the students could handle a giant millipede, a giant cockroach, a giant snail and a rat. Sadly, the snake had to stay at the lab as it had just laid eggs that morning!

Jacob from Year 4 said, “Zoolab was really cool! I held the giant millipede which felt like it was brushing your hand as it has so many legs.”

Mrs Smith, year 4 teacher commented: “Nothing can beat hands on learning. It enables the children to use all their senses to understand the world around them. As a result, the work they will do following this experience will be fabulous.”

Reception children also recently paid a visit to Ladyland Farm, Horley. The pupils became farmers for the day, feeding the sheep and goats. They learned about giving the calves their milk and handled some of the young chicks and ducklings. A bumpy tractor ride was the highlight of the day once chores had been done.

Georgina Allan, reception teacher, commented: “This farm visit is invaluable to the children. Handling the creatures really puts their learning into context and helps them understand ideas we have talked about in the classroom.”
