Fundraising group doubles its target

Delighted fundraisers in Bognor Regis have almost doubled their target in the best year.

Even a thunderstorm and a torrential downpour failed to dent the success of the town's branch of the Arthritis Research Campaign.

The inclement weather created mayhem at the scene of the branch's final fundraiser '“ a jazz and strawberry tea '“ with several small lakes appearing on the grass as well as scattering tables and chairs.

But the organisers were undeterred by the conditions just before the start and set to work as soon as the sun appeared to put everything in order before the first arrivals.

More than a hundred supporters went on to enjoy a traditional Sunday afternoon tea, appreciate the lively music from George and his Regis Jazz Band and spend generously.

An excellent raffle and the persuasive auctioneering skills of Jim Catt ensured the magnificent sum of 1,850 was raised. Committee chairman Bubbles Simmonds said she was delighted with the outcome. 'The committee extend their sincere appreciation to the local businesses who sponsored the event and who also donated many of the raffle prizes,' she stated.

This took the total brought in by the branch to 18,000 by the end of its financial year last month compared to its self-imposed target of 10,000.

The new fundraising year begins on October 18 with a bridge supper.

This will be followed by a repeat of the extremely popular race night on November 2.

Just before Christmas, Dr Andrew Naylor and Chichester Voices will give one of their special concerts at St Thomas a'Becket Church in Pagham.
