Fundraising such a drag for Seaford man

When Mike Shorer told a business mate he was drag racing for charity, the response was: “What’s that then, running round a track dressed as Dolly Parton?”

Having been told what it really meant, said friend told Mike, of Mike Shorer Fine Jewellery, Seaford, he would only sponsor him if he did one run down the dragstrip dressed in a Dolly Parton wig, huge bra and skirt.

So that is exactly what Mike is going to do on his Suzuki GSXR 750 at BikeFest on July 28 at North Weald Dragstrip, near Harlow, Essex in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Mike, 2013 Seahaven Retailer of the Year, is being sponsored to cross the 1/4 mile finish line at a terminal speed of 105mph - dressed as Dolly Parton.

He said if you would like to add £1 for each mile per hour over 110mph that would be greater still.

Mike said: “After last year’s 10th anniversary of doing the London to Brighton Bike Ride in aid of the British Heart Foundation ended with my left wrist pointing in an unusual direction and is now mainly titanium, my darling wife offered me some advice ‘don’t even think of entering that event again’.

“However I still want to do as much as I can while I am fit to raise money for those who aren’t. I have competed in various motor sports on four and two wheels but not drag racing, so I thought I’d give it a go.

“We all know people who have battled with this evil disease - it has taken several members of my family and friends- so the charity needs as much dosh as possible.”
