Future looking bright for Rye Creative Centre

The Creative Centre is expected to play a major role in supporting Rye College’s bid to open a new Studio School in the town.

The Centre breathed new life into the empty Freda Gardham School building, on New Road, and was launched on a two year trial basis.

It has provided workspace for local and nationally known artists as well as offering performance opportunities to young bands and holding workshops in poetry, writing and even rap.

Now East Sussex County Council has given approval for the lease to be extended.

Director Ian Ross said: “We are going from strength to strength, so much so that we have managed to grow the operation in these troubled times, becoming virtually self-sustaining during this last year.”

The lease extension has given the Centre the green light to launch an exciting new programme of events.

Ian Ross said: “We are delighted that East Sussex County Council is demonstrating its continued support by extending our lease. We are looking forward to developing new initiatives in the coming months including the launch of Back In The Room, a new cabaret revue night, and developing our partnership with Rye College Studio School.

“The Studio School will be a great opportunity to develop our existing links with Rye College. It will involve the young people in the events we run here so as to integrate their learning with real world, creative industry practice.”
