The University and College Union has said it will '˜resist' any attempt to close courses and make staff redundant in Hastings.

A statement released by the University of Brighton yesterday confirmed it will continue to ‘support the delivery of higher education in Hastings through an evolution of its current provision in the town’.

However, it failed to specify what this support would involve.

It also failed to respond to claims by the Brighton Student Union that the campus will close within two years, with courses being transferred to Brighton or Sussex Coast College.

University and College Union regional official, Michael Moran, said: “The vice-chancellor’s statement is vague and confusing for staff.

“We are not at all clear what the future holds for the various courses run in Hastings or for the staff who teach them.

“We suspect that there will be attempts at course closures and redundancies but UCU and the Hastings community will resist them.

“What does seem clear amongst all the uncertainty is that this statement does not spell out a solid and secure future for university education in Hastings.”
