Women from a wide variety of sectors and industries took part in the session, which was part of a series of events celebrating the centenary of the first women getting the vote.

Ms Ghani said, “A hundred years on from women getting the vote for the first time, it was a pleasure to join so many inspiring future female leaders and share my experiences with them.

“We need to get more women into all aspects of professional life, and I hope that I encouraged a few more women to get into politics.

“I’d like to thank everyone at East Sussex County Council for organising such a successful event, as well as all my fellow mentors – there was a great range of experiences and I’m sure all the mentees had a productive and enjoyable afternoon.”

Groups of ‘future female leaders’ spent about 15 minutes with each of the mentors in attendance at the event, which was organised by the county council at the Civic Centre in Uckfield.

These included Becky Shaw, chief executive of East Sussex County Council, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne and Sarah Driver, owner of the Rathfinny Wine Estate.

Ms Ghani talked about her journey to her election as the MP for Wealden and a Minister in the Department for Transport.
