The Rye Country Show has been hailed as an ‘absolutely phenomenal success’ attracting close to 3,000 visitors and raising thousands of pounds for St Michael’s Hospice.

The event, held on Saturday (August 15) at Lea Barn Farm, gets bigger and better every year and Rye Country Show committee member Dawn Penfold said it takes a lot of work by many people to reap the rewards of such a major attraction for the area.

“The committee would like to thank all sponsors, raffle prize donators, 1066 Marshals and all who helped before and on the day to make the show such a successful and enjoyable family day out,” she said.

“The fantastic selection of beautiful Classic Cars far exceeded all expectations with late entries almost doubling last year’s number.”

The Grand Parade of these historic machines and their stories took place in the Display Arena along with the well known Coakham Bloodhounds, Heavy Horses, Gun Dog Display and the ever imaginative Children’s Ridden Fancy Dress.

Dawn said after the torrential rain on the previous Thursday, thankfully the going was much improved for record entries – double the amount on last year – in the Horse Show.

“The new Hickstead qualifying classes were so popular the show jumping did not finish until after 5pm,” she said

“The Famous Rye Country Show’s own Dog Grand National produced much hilarity and several thrills and spills!

“The dog show was the biggest yet, with the usual pedigree and fun classes, a new obedience section and for the first time a Gun Dog Scurry which enthralled all the spectators.”

Following their own incredible show, The Dog Agility Display Team then encouraged any other dogs to ‘have a go’ much to the frustration and excitement of their owners.

Inside the first ever Country Living Tent there was a stunning selection of arts and craft stalls from pottery to soaps, fudge to jewellery and hand painted cards.

The Food Village had a large variety of gourmet delights available and after buying lunch and purchasing a drink from the Pimms Bar many visitors enjoyed live music by Phil and John.

Dawn said with more than 40 stalls on site, many selling local items, an artist and a trug maker to watch and the adrenaline rushing terrier racing, there were numerous things for all the family to partake in and enjoy.

Last year, the Rye Country Show raised £7,000 for St Michael’s Hospice and though final figures are yet to be determined before a cheque can be presented Dawn says the committee is hopeful that they will again make a substantial donation to the local charity.

“It was an extremely successful event,” she said,

“Many people said they had such a wonderful day, well organised, with so much going on.

“It was an absolutely phenomenal day.”
