Gallery exhibition marks Battle Art Trail

IN a month of exciting cultural activity in Battle, Saffron Gallery’s current exhibitions continue until Saturday September 24.

To mark The World Turned Upside Down art trail, Saffron hosts a sister exhibition, called Inside Out, where the theme will be freely interpreted by artists including Svetlana K-Lie, Louise Giblin and Cathryn Kemp.

K-Lie, a former Best Young Sculptor of Russia and Best Female Sculptor of Russia, unveils her latest bronze sculpture titled Cheburashka, an adaptation of her current Broomhill Sculpture Prize shortlisted sculpture.

Giblin, currently casting her Olympians series of sculptures including British greats Dame Kelly Holmes and Kris Akabussi MBE, unveils a number of her recent sculptures.

Both sculptors additionally exhibit a selection of prints and drawings.

Cathryn Kemp explores narratives around female identity and rites of passage in her textiles and printmaking and exhibits a number of her latest prints.

Running concurrently at the Saffron Gallery is Horizon Lines No 3, a solo exhibition of Irish artist Con Cremin’s latest oil paintings. Cremin has exhibited throughout Ireland, at several shows in Belfast, in Turkey and in London.

His show at Saffron marks his first exhibition in the UK in a solo capacity and launches his Horizon Lines No 3 series of paintings.

Intended as a personal impression rather than a specific landscape or location, the majority are directly influenced by scenery and Cremin’s bus journeys through the Irish countryside.

The paintings emphasize the play between the semi-representational sky and the texture of the land and sea.

The paintings are open to interpretation and not literally portraying an actual version of reality. Cremin said: “I compare them to looking up at the clouds as a child, imagining the shapes to be animals or buildings or castles or whatever the child’s imagination sees amongst the clouds.

“The ‘Horizon Lines’ paintings can be viewed in the same manner.”

Horizon Lines No 3 and Inside Out run until Saturday September 24 at Saffron Gallery, 59-60 High Street, Battle, 10am-5pm, Monday to Saturday.
