GALLERY: Greenpower event at Goodwood attracts youngsters from Bognor

Excitement was simply electric as youngsters from around the country battled it out at this year's Greenpower competition.

This year's heats attracted more than 200 teams from schools and colleges, which were whittled down to 75 teams for the final which took place at Goodwood Motor Circuit over the weekend.

Each team had to race a single-seater electric car they had designed, powered by a 24-volt electric motor and two 12-volt batteries. Each car took part in a four-hour endurance race cheered on by friends, family and other spectators.

The annual event is organised by Littlehampton-based company Greenpower, which promotes careers in engineering and technology to young people aged nine to 21 through practical, hands-on activities.

As well as the endurance race, there were various exhibitions about current engineering innovations. A full-scale model of the Bloodhound SSC, which is bidding to break the landspeed record, was also on show.

Duncton-based Seaford College took second place with its car SCO7. Schools from Chipping Sudbury in Gloucestershire took first and third place, with their cars Rotary Racer and R-Pods respectively. Teams from St Paul's Catholic College, Slindon College and Westbourne House School also took part.

Jeremy Way of Greenpower said: "It was a really successful day and there were a lot of spectators. We had excellent weather and it was a very exciting race."
