Gallery: Scarecrow Festival underway in Battle

The Annual Battle Scarecrow Festival began today (Monday, June 29) with more than 50 scarecrows on display throughout the town centre.

Residents, community groups and businesses have made their own scarecrows to raise funds for a Health Pathway to go around the North Trade Road Recreation Ground with exercise stations for all ages.

The entries will be judged on Thursday (July 3) with a special prize for the best scarecrow made from recycled materials and awards will be handed out on Thursday, July 23.

Battle town councillor and co-organiser Richard Jessop believes the festival will draw in more tourists and help to bring the community together.

“These are the sorts of things that makes the town special and a little more vibrant,” he said.

“Battle is a tourist town and if you have something that is a bit different to clothes shops and then it will benefit everyone.”

Various businesses and groups are taking part in this year’s event including the Women’s Institute, dance groups and St Mary’s Nursery.

Entrants are charged £5 for their scarecrows to be dotted around in shop windows, the market square and gardens with the proceeds going towards a path around the park with some equipment for working out.

“The Health Pathway will encourage people to walk and cycle in an environment away from traffic and in time, there will be exercise facilities along the route for people to stop off and exercise,” Mr Jessop added.

The scarecrows will be on display until Saturday, July 18.
