ST BEDE'S student Luke Wells was well and truly the man of the moment when he took the wicket of none other than cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar in a special match between a Headmasters XI and the world famous Lashings.

Despite a short rain delay on a slightly overcast day, around 1,000 people flocked to the ground of the school in Upper Dicker to see some of the biggest names in world cricket take on some of the brightest young prospects in the county.

And they were not to be disappointed. On a perfectly prepared wicket, Tendulkar '“ revered as a sporting god in his own country '“ opened the batting with fellow Indian Test star Dinesh Mongia.

Despite some good deliveries from the Headmaster's XI bowlers, Tendulkar and Mongia put on a 131 runs for the first wicket. Mongia was finally bowled by Ryan King for 72, to be replaced by the Lashings captain Ritchie Richardson. However, the former West Indian captain (below) was dismissed for 11, caught King, bowled Jordan Turner.

Tendulkar, ranked number two in the world of one day internationals continued to accumulate runs.

But in a moment that will live with him forever, 17-year-old Luke Fisher (pictured above left bowling to the great man) caught and bowled the great man, for 98, denying him his century on the St Bede's wicket. The wicket was no more than Wells deserved as he had seen a difficult chance '“ a Tendulkar edge behind '“ go down off his own bowling earlier in the innings.

The Lashings World XI finished their innings 239 for five off 30 overs.
