Garden magic makes Burgess Hill beautiful

Mixed weather brought out the magic from gardeners in Burgess Hill as contest judges were astonished by high quality.

Burgess Hill in Bloom chairman Cathy Barnett said of the 2013 entries: “The judges were pleasantly delighted with the quality of the planting across Burgess Hill this year.

“The damp cold start, followed by sunshine, had helped to bring out some astonishing displays.

“Although some flowers were a month behind. for example roses, they were blooming alongside later clematis and other plants, leading to lots of lovely surprises. Despite the slugs trying to eat their way through the vegetables, there were a lot more vegetable plots on display.”

“Care for the environment was evident in most gardens, with bird boxes, insect colonies, butterflies, bees and even chickens co-habiting with the plants.“The hard work from all the gardeners, young and old, has all added to making Burgess Hill a beautiful place to be this summer.” RESULTS 2013: Best Environmentally Friendly: Winner, Michael Langridge (The Vineries); Front Garden: Winner, Ann Tomlinson (Dunstall Ave.); Side/Back Garden: Winner, Caroline Powell (Cromwell Rd), Highly Commended, Sheila Preston (Payton Drive), Commended, Shelagh Jackson (Warelands); Garden Design: Winner, Josine Baker, Highly Commended, G.
