GardenAfrica in Burwash has London Marathon places

EAGER RUNNERS who have been unable to find a place in next year’s London Marathon are invited to apply to a Burwash-based charity.

GardenAfrica funds sustainable horticultural training to enable gardeners and smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa to maximise production on their land.

Previous experience is not required. If you want to get fit in 2012 and make a difference to families in Africa get in touch as soon as possible. GardenAfrica will help runners with training programmes, clothing advice and access to training runs.

Carol Klein from BBC’s Gardener’s World commented: “Join me in supporting GardenAfrica, and enable people to reach across the generations to rediscover traditional skills and knowledge that will help them to cultivate a more sustainable future.”

GardenAfrica was set up in 2002 and thousands have been helped by its training programmes that promote food security using tools and techniques that help counter drought and exhausted soil. As a result, participants increase diversity, quantity and quality of the crops they grow improving the health of their children. Surpluses are available for sale. The charity has seen how profits are used to access school and medical care helping families every year - an effective path to a better future.
