Gardens project helps epilepsy sufferer

The 22-year-old from Worthing had found her condition restricted her abilities in the workplace and previous employers were not always understanding, leaving her lacking self-confidence.

But The Aldingbourne Trust’s work preparation scheme gave her a boost and, combined with her passion for gardening, has helped her gain her dream role as gardening assistant at Wyevale Garden Centre in Findon.

Jenny worked with Keith Colin, founder and project leader of Sustainable Sussex, which cultivates green-fingered talent while growing environmental awareness.

“The key to our success is our local partnerships, particularly the Aldingbourne Trust, who nurture people with learning disabilities,” he explained.

“Their work preparation scheme prepares people for the workplace through voluntary placements. With their help, we have engaged local people who now work with us and our team has literally grown.”

Sustainable Sussex started almost a year ago with a patch of land at Worthing Leisure Centre.
