Gary batters world record with total of 140,088 punches for Save the Children

A HARD-HITTING boxer punched well above his weight to raise funds for Save the Children.

Gary Haynes spent 10.5 hours punching in the front window of the charity's Devonshire Road shop, landing an incredible 140,088 blows on the unfortunate boxing mannequin.

He started at 6am on Saturday morning, describing his ordeal as: "The hardest thing I have ever done.

"The pain in my shoulders, fists and wrists was unbelievable.

"I'm still suffering after two days, but I am feeling a lot better.

"The hardest part was the last 800 punches, which felt like I was hitting a brick wall, and I'll never forget the pain.

"But I got there in the end through sheer determination, and saw it through to the end."

Gary, who raised 340 on the day, is now sending video footage of his punchathon to the Guiness World Records organisation, and is confident his new effort, which eclipses the current record of 122,000 puniches in 12 hours, will be verified shortly.

A quick analysis of Gary's times reveals he spent the 10.5 hours punching at a rate of 3.7 hits every second, or 12,500 an hour.

Family and friends, including trainer Jon Hiscocks and Jordan Cruickshank helped count his fists of fury, chiming in with moral support on the five minute breaks he took each hour.

"I'd like to thank everyone who came in and supported me and donated on the day," said Gary.

"I'd also like to say thank you to Nick from Southlands boxing club for donating some vital equipment.

"Every 4 we raised has helped to save a child's life somewhere in the world - so it was worth doing."
