Gas alarm sparks evacuation of Brighton seafront hotel

Six fire crews have been called to a seafront hotel in Brighton this afternoon (April 23) after a gas alarm sounded.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) was called to Kings Road, Brighton at 12.30pm to 'reports of smoke and a gas alarm sounding'.

A fire service spokesperson said: "The premises have been evacuated. Firefighters are still at the scene. No casualties reported."

Part of the seafront road is sealed off while the incident is dealt with.

At 2.31pm, the fire service said: "Brighton seafront from Madeira Drive to West Street, due to an ongoing incident. Part of the road between Middle Street and West Street is closed. Drivers urged to use an alternative route."

Brighton and Hove Buses said: "We've been informed of a chemical/gas leak on the seafront in Brighton resulting in a road closure.

"Eastbound traffic is being diverted via West Street and Queens Road, causing further severe congestion and delays to services."

Update: ESFRS said fire crews left the scene at 4.35pm.
