Gas works to add to Brighton seafront disruption

Gas works on the A259 are set to add to delays for drivers on Brighton and Hove's seafront road.

The works by SGN begin on Monday (June 12) for eight months, as part of a £1.45 million project to upgrade the gas network in Kingsway and King’s Road.

This is in addition to the work at Shelter Hall, which has seen roadworks on the seafront road at the end of West Street for more than a year.

A spokesperson from SGN said: “We’re using an innovative robotic system called CISBOT to carry out this work, which will ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.

“The innovative robot will work underground to seal the joints in our gas main along the A259 from St Aubyns in Hove to The Grand hotel in Brighton. We’ll need to implement a temporary lane closure around our work area to ensure everyone’s safety. We’ll start work in the westbound carriageway of the A259 Kingsway at St Aubyns and progress eastwards in phases. We may need to close a lane in both directions at times, but we’ll always maintain two-way traffic along the A259 during our project.

“We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, CISBOT can travel approximately 170 metres along the gas pipe in each direction from a single excavation. This means we’re able to upgrade this 2,500-metre section of network without the need for long trenches along the A259 to access our pipe. By using our innovative CISBOT technology, we’re able to upgrade our gas main faster and reduce the impact of our essential work on the city’s residents and road users.”
