Gearing up for Bognor carnival's return

Details have been revealed about this summer's revival of the Bognor Regis Carnival.

The town council has decided to re-instate the popular community event for the first time in four years.

It will take place on June 13. The parade will start at 2.30pm and cover about a mile along the seafront between the Regis Centre car park and into West Park.

The route is shorter than the one for the former carnival, which was run by Bognor Regis Lions Club.

The town council wanted to reduce the distance travelled by those taking part to encourage as many entries as possible from a wide range of community groups and local schools.

Sue Holmes, the town council's events officer, said: "Many of these groups will be walking or cycling or roller skating rather than on floats.

It was felt that a shorter distance would be easier for them to manage.

"We know that the prospect of decorating a float can be daunting for small groups but with a bit of imagination and use of colour and props, a walking group can be just as impressive as the larger floats."

A workshop has been arranged by the council to provide advice to those thinking of entering the carnival for the first time.

It will contain plenty of hints about health and safety, do's and don'ts and costume and prop design.

It will take place on April 2, repeated on April 4, at the Regis Centre. Attendance is free.
