Gearing up for wacky bathtub race

A Felpham man is again organising the Arundel Festival annual bathtub race.

Martin Harvey, of Old Rectory Gardens, is in the final stages of preparing for the August 16 occasion in which riverworthy wacky racers run riot.

The race starts at 12.45pm at The Black Rabbit in Offham. The racers go upriver in the Offham direction to a buoy where they turn and are helped by the tide on the return journey to the pub.

Entries will be accepted on the day. Previous years have seen such madcap constructions as a floating Thomas the Tank Engine, a paddle wheel-powered Batmobile, a Viking invasion and the Flintstones' car.

The craft has to be based around a metal, plastic or fibreglass bath and measure no more than 6ft wide and 8ft long.

Power is by rowing and no part of the craft can come from a purpose-built marine craft.

Prizes are available for the first metal and plastic bath tubs home as well as the fastest ladies. The best fancy dress and best designed entries will also win. Every competitor will receive a medal.
